Dr. Kendal Major

In 1977 Kendal Versil Olson Major graduated from St. John’s College. At age 16 he enrolled in Tuskegee University, Alabama and graduated with honors in 1981. In 1987, he graduated with the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS) from Howard University College of Dentistry, Washington DC.

Dr. Major was accepted for specialized certification in Periodontics and Dental Implants at Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey in 1987. In 1989 he graduated as the first black student from this post-doctoral program and one of 54 black Periodontists in North America. Dr. Major returned home becoming the first Bahamian and Caribbean Specialist in Periodontics and Dental Implants.

He is a Diplomat of the International Congress of Dental Implants and founder and director of the Bahamas First Study Club for Dental Education.

He served in the public service at Princess Margaret Hospital as Acting Head of Dental Services from 1989-1993 and Chairman of the Bahamas Dental Council from 2002-2007.

He operates a comprehensive dental center- Center for Specialized Dentistry, in Nassau. He has pioneered the use of lasers in The Bahamas and has placed and restored over three thousand dental implants.

Under the leadership of the late Dr. Myles Munroe, he has served as President Real Men Ministries International of BFM and Chairman of the Prison Ministry. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Governors.

In 2003, he was appointed to the National Commission on Prison Reform, whose report was tabled before Parliament in 2003. 

He is a Past President, Past Secretary and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of West Nassau and a Member of Board of Directors Teen Challenge Bahamas.

He authors a weekly educational column in the Tuesday’s Health and Wellness Section of the Nassau Guardian entitled, “The Specialist”.

Dr. Major’s motto is “Touching People, Changing Lives.” He believes a healthy smile begins with a healthy foundation and a healthy foundation begins with strong teeth and gums. 

Answering the call to national service, Dr. Major was elected to the Honorable House of Assembly as the Member of Parliament for the Garden Hills Constituency 2012-2017. He was further elected unanimously to the high office as Speaker of the House.

As Speaker and Member of Parliament, Dr. Major distinguished himself as a person of character, courage and justice. He was an advocate for parliamentary reform and served the constituents of Garden Hills with distinction.

During his tenure as Honorable Speaker, he also served as Executive Council Member in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Chairman of the CPA International Conference in July 2016.

Dr Major is presently not in front-line politics yet he still engaged in nation building. In January 2022 he was invited to serve as Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA)- the agency responsible for transforming and financing the health system care for The Bahamas.

His life’s mission is to speak, coach and train authentic leadership to organizations, businesses and individuals. Dr. Major’s passion is leadership. He believes everything elevates or declines with the quality of leadership and everyone deserves to be led well. He believes we are all born with the seed of leadership; just waiting to be activated and unleashed. 

Presently, he practices full time as a Periodontist/Implant Specialist at the Center for Specialized Dentistry. 

Dr. Major is married to the lovely Monique Major (nee Smith) and is the proud father of Brittany, Kendal Jr. and Kyalia.
